On August 12, 2026, an exceptional astronomical event will occur over Europe: a total solar eclipse, the first visible from continental Europe since 1999. Here's everything you need to know to enjoy it… without risking your eyes.
What will happen on August 12, 2026?
In the late afternoon, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun. The path of totality — where the Sun will be completely obscured — will notably cross northern Spain. In France, the eclipse will be partial but spectacular: more than 90% of the Sun will be obscured in the south of the country, and a very strong occultation everywhere else. The further southwest you are, the more impressive the show will be.
What time to observe?
The eclipse will take place in the early evening (around 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM Paris time depending on your location, with the maximum around 8:30 PM). Check the exact time for your city closer to the day – we will publish a city-by-city guide.
⚠️ Rule #1: NEVER look at the Sun without protection
Even 90% obscured, the Sun remains dangerous for your eyes. Looking directly at it, even for a few seconds, can cause irreversible retinal damage — without pain at the time. And no, sunglasses, X-rays, or improvised filters do not protect you.
The only safe protection for direct observation: ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses.
How to recognize safe glasses?
Before buying, check that the glasses bear:
- the mention of the standard ISO 12312-2;
- the CE marking (European regulation 2016/425 on protective equipment);
- intact filters: never any scratches, holes, or folds on the filter.
Our Euro Eclipse Glasses are made in the USA by a world specialist in solar observation, CE and ISO 12312-2 certified, and shipped from France within 2 to 4 days.
Our tips for D-Day
- Equip each member of the group with their own glasses — pay particular attention to children.
- Inspect your glasses before use; discard them if the filter is damaged.
- Take breaks: observe for short periods.
- Prepare in advance: in 1999, glasses were impossible to find in the last few days across Europe. Don't wait until the last minute!
